Detail:
Discover how famed novelist, journalist and social critic Charles Dickens shaped the way we celebrate Christmas.
This hybrid event welcomes all persons unable to visit us in person to participate in our Christmas programme. A limited number of persons will be able to join us in person for the talk which will be broadcast live from the Museum at Doughty Street. Those purchasing online access tickets will also receive a recording of the talk to watch at their leisure.
In this festive lunchtime talk our very own Curator, Kirsty Parsons, will explore why Charles Dickens is so closely associated with the festive season and credited with inventing Christmas (spoiler alert, he didn't!).
Learn how Dickens’s views on festive traditions and charitable giving were heavily shaped by the changes taking place in Victorian society and discover how his legacy influences our experience of Christmas in the twenty-first century.
Kirsty Parsons, Curator at the Charles Dickens Museum, will take you on a festive foray into the world of Dickens. The talk will explore the Museum's collection of Christmassy delights and share her insights into the social history behind a Victorian Christmas. The content is designed for adults but persons any age are welcome to join.
