Details:
‘a day in London sets me up again and starts me. But the toil and labour of writing, day after day, without that magic lantern, is IMMENSE!!’
(Dickens writing to his friend John Forster, 1846)
Dickens referenced a popular Victorian entertainment to allude to the London that delighted, excited and inspired him. In a modern world of television, film, gaming and other pursuits we have possibly forgotten the magic lantern show. Family parlour pursuits at magic lantern shows achieved such popularity that in the Victorian age shows became large-scale professional performances attracting big audiences. Are you curious to experience one for yourself?
To accompany our special exhibition Dickensian London: The Magic Lantern City we have arranged a weekend of special magic lantern performances from internationally renowned magic lantern performers Jeremy and Carolyn Brooker.
Their shows feature an authentic triunial (or Triple) magic lantern combining three projectors in a single device. This is the most complex and rarest form of magic lantern entertainment. It allows them to present fast-moving shows featuring the most spectacular effects the lantern can produce. Jeremy and Carolyn Brooker have been performing together for over 20 years to perfect this demanding art. In their hands, the beauty and visual spectacle which has kept the magic lantern at the forefront of popular entertainment for centuries retains the power to fully engage a modern audience.
Join us for a Christmas adventure like you've never seen, and let Jeremy and Carolyn Brooker transport you to a world where the supernatural comes alive!
